Live Programming Streams
A series of programming streams born as a result of my talk, "What Programming is Never About", discussed later on below. Every Sunday at 5PM EDT on twitch.tv/abnercoimbre
AUTHOR
Data-Oriented Design: Solving Programming Problems
I am writing a book that abandons all strict notions of object-oriented programming, functional programming, agile methodologies, and any other "100%" solutions you may conceive. It transitions the reader from "All Hail the Code" land to a straightforward approach. The YouTube talk shown further down goes into detail. No "terminological fuckery" either, as one of the commenters put it.
Casey Muratori has placed me in contact with an interesting publisher, and we are ironing out the details of how to flesh out the book. In the mean time, I need to finish that one Java book mentioned below.
AUTHOR
Modular Programming for Enterprise Applications
How to straightforwardly attack development of large-scale network applications. While still here at NASA, writing began June 15th, 2015 under a publishing contract. Updates will be posted right here or @abnercoimbre
wHAT PROGRAMMING IS NEVER ABOUT
Well-received informal talk released June 2015.
Programming is not really about code, but how you solve problems with it. You only care about the code when it comes to structuring large programs, and that in itself is a form of meta problem-solving. However, I have many friends and coworkers who seem to obsess over code, when the majority of the time, the programmer's job is not to write code.
Handmade Hero Moderator
Handmade Hero is a massive undertaking to develop a professional-quality game from scratch as an in-depth, low-level programming series on Twitch (i.e. absolutely no licensed engines or 3rd party libraries). The Twitch staff have put this stream on the front page, gathering thousands of viewers every weeknight. The host of this project is Casey Muratori, renowned game programmer who helped in the development of Braid and the upcoming The Witness. I help support the stream and website, and Casey has made me a moderator to oversee that the community is civil, help program the IRC bot, and aid new viewers with programming-related questions. Check us out every weeknight on twitch.tv/handmade_hero, 8PM PST Mon-Thu and 11AM PST on Fridays.
Launch Control System - NASA
LCS is NASA's new Launch Control System being developed at Kennedy Space Center. As a co-op, I am one the software engineers of this system performing low-level programming. It'll be used to launch the next generation of American spacecraft, both commercial and government-owned, as well as NASA's New Mega-Rocket for deep space exploration, with a launch projected as early as 2018.
jmonkeyengine 3.0 cookbook
I was contacted by Packt Publishing to be a technical reviewer for this book. First edition was released August 2014.
jMonkeyEngine excels at rapid 3D visualization and game development. The cookbook has the right suggestions to quickly materialize your ideas, and the community at http://jmonkeyengine.org/ is quite active and supportive.
Virtual Factory 2.0
3D Simulation. NSF Award No. 0835990
With a generous grant from the National Science Foundation, I was lead developer for version 2.0. Virtual Factory is a simulation where industrial engineering students manage a furniture factory, applying concepts and equations learned in class while seeing them affect the world real-time. Serving a specialized audience, it is now (successfully) being used as an educational tool in some university classrooms.
Cave Dwellers
It's so dark in here.
